WHAT IS CRYPTOCURRENCY?

Cryptocurrency is a technological innovation utilizing distributed ledger and decentralized transaction validation to enable secure & anonymous transfers of value across the Internet. The earliest cryptocurrency (Bitcoin) was created in January 29, 2009, just three months after the financial crisis of 2008. At that point, the valuation of 1 BTC was approximately $0.00076, Bitcoin is now worth more than $20,000 as of December 2017.

Bitcoin?

Bitcoin, designed based on a paper by the eponymous Satoshi Nakamoto, is a decentralized currency that enables peer-to-peer transactions across the Internet, without relying on a single point of central vulnerability for validating or authenticating new ledger entries. Unlike traditional online payment processors or e-payment gateways, Bitcoin does not depend on a trusted third party for the transaction, it is entirely decentralized, relying on a ledger of transactions distributed across a worldwide network of computers. Transactions in this ledger from account to account can be reviewed, but not the identities of account holders, and are stored on what is called "the blockchain".

Other Coins

Ethereum

Ethereum is an open software platform based on blockchain technology that enables developers to build and deploy decentralized applications, or issue smart contracts/tokens on a similar platform. Most ICOs (Initial Coin Offerings) use the Ethereum ERC20-compliant framework, and trade/transact accordingly on the Ethereum ledger. It has a significantly smaller per unit cost than Bitcoin, and current has the second highest market cap among cryptocurrencies second only to Bitcoin, since its initial release in 2015.

Litecoin

Started in 2011, Litecoin is a similar version of Bitcoin that uses a different transaction encryption protocol which is faster and cheaper transaction costs. It uses essentially the same technical architecture of Bitcoin, and currently transaction speeds are approximately 100x faster than Bitcoin’s average

Dashcoin

Implemented in 2014 as an open source peer-to-peer Cryptocurrency. On top of Bitcoin's feature set, it currently offers instant transactions (InstantSend), private transactions (PrivateSend) and operates a self-governing and self-funding model that enables the Dash network to pay individuals and businesses to perform work that adds value to the network.

Zcash

A decentralized and open-source Cryptocurrency aimed at using cryptography to provide enhanced privacy protections. While the original Bitcoin blockchain contains all records of the value and amounts of each transaction, Zcash allows users to opt-in to shielded transactions which hide the sender, recipient, and value records on the blockchain. Initially released in 2016.

Monero

A decentralized and open-source Cryptocurrency aimed at using cryptography to provide enhanced privacy protections. Unlike other cryptocurrencies, it is designed to have all transactions fully shielded and anonymized by default. It uses zero-ring cryptography to validate transactions on its ledger while ensuring that no transaction information is visible on the ledger. Initially released in 2016.
